MARCH 2003: Dave Winchester finished 3rd at the Pipeline contest this year and made it in the WST to boot...we ask him a few questions on how it all went.
Q. Dave can you please describe how you made it to third place at pipe? well i guess i just kept on getting through my heats. i wasnt really thinking about how far i was getting, i was just surfing each heat like it > >was any other.i guess i just got lucky with the waves to, i mean you have to be the one in your heat getting the best waves. i was loving it making > >it to the final though.pretty happy.

Q. How tough was the contest?i felt the contest was nearly as hard as all the other years. it had most of > the top guys in it but not all. only about half from the super tour went in > it, proberly even less than half. the level still seemed high to me.

Q. Jeff Hubbard thinks you are going to do well in the WST...what do you think of that?
im loving him saying that although, it does kind of put a bit a pressure on > me to do well.its definatly a confident booster and hopefully i can use it to do well.
Q. Who ripped in Hawaii? From what i saw Stewart was sick this yea, .showing everyone he still has it. the main aussies were Toby and Ben player, Tate Martin. Kingy and Beau Day were ripping in the contest. there are so many guys ripping over there.

Q. Anything else?did you gets those jumper shots yet?????

Q. So you've been travelling lately? Cloud 9?
A. I i went over east for a couple of aussie tour contests and won one and came 5th in another. a couple of weeks ago i got back from the hillipines where i got 5th place.

Q.What are you up to at the mo?
J just in training for hawaii. trying to get some waves as always.

Q..Looking forward to Hawaii? yeah kind of, im mean its always crowded but you can still enjoy yourself.

Q.Who you been surfin with? mostly been surfing with chad jackson, brad hughes, whitey and ryan hardy and my spook brother ozzy. those guys rip.

Q.What is your definition of style? big smooth flowing moves.

Q How did you get eee ooo ranga as a nickname or can't this be printed? Nugget always looked at me and Hughesy and go yuk ooo eee ranga. just because rangas are so discusting to look at haha.
